Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie: Blog #5 (p. 176-205)

What causes Steven to seek his counselor's advice? What does she tell him to do? Do you think this is good advice for him? Why or why not? In what specific ways does he follow her advice and what is the outcome?

He wants to get out of class and he is starting to trust her.Plus, he wanted a few candy hearts. The counselor tells him to focus on the things he can change and not the things he can't change.I think this is good advice, because if you always focus on things you can't do your not going to have much beleif in yourself that you can accomplish something. One thing Steven does to help with his family is talk to his drum lesson teacher. He tells him his family can't afford the lessons so he can't come anymore. The teacher tells him he'll give him lessons for free so everything works out.

Steven says he excuse for going to the counselor was to get out of class. I think that Steven really wanted help with his problem about the dream.

The advice Mrs.Galley gives him is to not agonize over the things you can't change but focus on the things you can change. I do think it is good advice for Steven. He always says he feels like he can't help and this is a way to make him feel like he can help his family. Even though he may not know what problems he can change or help fix.

Steven follows Mrs.Galley's advice by decideing to quit drum lessons to save his family money.

Steven seeks his counselor's advice because he has been having a dream about his brother dying every other night for 2 months. The counselor tells him to not agonize over the stuff that he can't fix, but try to fix the things that he can.

I think this was good advise for Steven because he didn't realize that he could actually do something to make this better for the whole family, including himself.

Steven follows this advise well. Jeffrey went to school and a new kid told Jeffrey that he was bald. Steven could see that this upset Jeffrey, so that night, Steven shaved his head so that Jeffrey wouldn't be the only bald one.

I agree with Kayla. Mrs. Galley gave him some good advice about focusing on the things you can change and not the things you can't change.

Steven's mother is the one who tell's Steven to go to the councelor.
She tells Steven to focus on the thing's he can change and not the thing's he can't change.
I think it is good advice for him because he hasn't really thought about the thing's he can change through this all.
One thing he does to follow her advice is to stop taking drum lessons. But instead, the teacher gives him lesson's for free, so he can still go. So Steven is happy.

I agree with Xavier. The councelor does give him good advice because he doesn't foucs on the things he can change and that will be different for him.

At first, Steven wanted to get out of class. But once he got in there and started talking, he just let it all go.

Mrs. Galley tells Steven not to agonize over the things he can't change, focus on the things he can change. I think that this is good advice for Steven because he was starting to totally fall apart.

From the advice that Mrs. Galley gave Steven, he thinks that he can quit his drum lessons to save the family $80 a month. When he tries to quit the lessons and give Mr. Stoll his Special Sticks, Mr. Stoll says that he will let him keep his Special Sticks and keep comming to lessons for free.

I agree with Xavier. He does realize that he should focus on the things he can change, rather than the things he can't change. And that really makes a difference.

I think Steven finally decides to take his counselor’s advice when he really thinks her advice through. She told Steven to stop agonizing about the things he can’t change, but why not try to work on the things he could change. Yes, I think it was good advice for him because he knew he couldn’t change lots of things in his life, but there was lots of stuff he could change. For instance, Steven knew he couldn’t change the fact that his brother had leukemia, his mom had to stop working, that his family couldn’t pay some bills, and so much more. Then again, he also knew he could change lots of things. For example, he knew he could help his family with the bills by quitting his drum lessons, he help keep Jeffrey healthy, and lots more.

Steven follows her advice by quitting his drum lessons, turning down Renee Albert when she came to tutor him, tried to stay out of trouble so his parents wouldn’t have to worry about him, and lots more. So far there hasn’t really been an outcome with Steven’s parents because they haven’t really noticed him much more than they did before. The outcome of turning down Renee Albert was that she was mad at first, but they worked that out. The outcome of quitting his drum lessons was that his teacher decided to give him free lessons.

I think Steven finally decided to take the counselor's advice was when he really thought through what she had said about trying to change the things he could instead of the things he couldn't change.

Brianna B. said...

I agree with Aleah S. because I don't think Steven had really thought about the things he could change.

At first Steven just goes to the counselor to get out of class, but once he started to trust her, he told her everything. Steven tells her about a dream he is having about his brother dying almost every other night.

Mrs. Galley tells Steven, “Instead of agonizing over the things you can’t change, why don’t you try working on the things you CAN change.” I think this is good advice for him because he will stop trying to change the fact that his brother has cancer. Even though he couldn’t make Jeffery’s illness go away, he could change lots of little things that would make a big difference.

Steven follows the counselor’s advice by tying to quit his drum lessons. As a result, Steven’s teacher gives him free lessons because he wants to help out his best student. Steven also shaves his head because a kid in Jeffery’s class called him bald. Steven knew that Jeffery was really hurt by the comment so he made him feel better by shaving his head too.

I think Steven needed to tell someone about his dream because he was keeping it all inside, so he went to Mrs. Galley. His excuse was to get out of class, but i think he really wanted to talk to someone.

Mrs. Galley tells Steven to focus on things he can do, not things he can do. I personally think this is great advice, because if you can't do anything about something, why worry about it all the time? Expecially when you could be trying to fix other things.

One way Steven takes the councelor's advice is by trying to quit drum lessons. Even though he still gets to play the drums, he's helping the family out because he told his drum teacher, so they no longer have to pay.

I agree with Rachael when she said Steven helped out his family by shaving his head. Even though he isn't saving money or anything for the family, he is making Jeffery more confident and happy. And in my oppinion, that's a very very sweet thing to do. ( And i don't think that just because all the girls in his class thought it was sweet.)

I agree with Xavier H. If Steven always focuses on the things he can't do, he won't have much belief in himself. It really helps if you have faith in yourself if you are trying to accomplish something.

He wanted to get out of class. She tell's him to focus on the thing's he can change. I think this is very good advice you are going to have more self confidence if you follow this advice. He quit's his drum lesson's. Then his drum teacher tell's him he could have drum lesson's for free.

I agree with Josie because if Mrs. Galley had not given him the advice he could have fallen apart.

Steven goes to Mrs. Galley because he is so stressed out about his dream. Its bothering him so much, and i didnt think he could take it much longer. She tells him not to worry about the things he can't change but to focous on the things that he can. I think it was good advice for him because the fact that Jeffery has cancer had nothing to with Steven and there was nothing he could do about it.Steven figures out that if he stops band lessons then it will nock off 80 dollars of his familys expences every month. But then his teacher gives them to him for free so it all turns out to be okay.

Adrienne H. said...

I agree with Xavier H. He has a lot of good points on how Steven used Mrs. Galleys advice.

Kayla F. said...

I agree with Rachael E. Instead of agonizing over things he can't fix he thought of ways he could try to help or fix his brothers self esteem. Like shaving his head.

I think Steven just wanted to get away from the awkward situation he was in with his teacher and he wanted some candy hearts. Also, I think Steven is secretly dying to tell someone and talk about The Dream, and who better than Mrs. Galley? I think Steven is really starting to trust her. She tells Steven not to focus on the bad things that he can't change, but focus on the good things that he can change. I think this is amazing advice for Steven. Not just the words themselves, but the fact that it came from Mrs. Galley is going to make it stick in his head and he really does follow her advice. When Steven's really mad he always thinks if he can change it or not.

I agree with Josie. I feel that she has really good points about how he opens up.

Stevens wants to get out of his class plus he is starting to trust Mrs. Galley. Mrs. Galley tell steven instsead of trying to think about the things you cant change try working on the things you can change. I think this is good advise for steven because it will help his family out if he works on the things he can change. He follows her advise and trys to help the things he can change by quiting drum lessons to save money.

He seeks counselors advice because he realizes it will help him overcome Jeffrey's illness. Mrs. Galley tells Steven that he shouldn't focus on the things he couldn't change wrather than focusing on the things he can change. Personally, I think this is great advice for Steven. If it weren't for counciling he would have broke down. Ever sence Mrs. Galley has told him that advice he has acted better toward Jeffrey's illness. For example, Steven cut all his hair off just so he could make Jeffrey feel better about being bald.
Steven also tried quiting drum lessons so he could save his family $80 a month.

Devyn C. said...

I agree with Alyssa K. I to believe that Steven is really beginning to trust Mrs. Galley by telling her about the dream.

I agree with Madeline that Steven is trying really hard to find ways to save money for his family. He really cares about Jeffrey and the rest of the family.

Steven really decides to take Mrs. Galley's advice when he thinks it through. She was right, he needed to focus on the things that he can change rather that agonizing over the things he can't. He realized that he cannot change the fact that Jeffrey has leukemia or that his mother quit working so that she could take care of Jeffrey, but he can help his family out by quitting drum lessons to save his family around $80 a month.

This is good advice for Steven because although they don't have much money and Jeffrey is sick, he still has his family and he needs to help them in every way he can. He felt bad for Jeffrey because he went bald, so he shaved his head so that Jeffrey was not the only bald one. Steven followed Mrs. Galley's advice and he helped with the financial problem by telling Mr. Stoll that he could no longer take drum lessons because his family was really tight with money. Because of this Mr. Stoll offered Steven free drum lessons. Steven also shaved his head like Jeffrey to show Jeffrey that he was not alone.

Maddy S. said...

I agree with Kayla F. Steven always feels like he can't help his family. The advice that Mrs. Galley gave him shows him that there is always something that he can do.

At first Steven just wanted to get out of class, but when they started talking he seemed clear that he wanted to talk about his dreams and his other problems. This is the first time he has told anybody about the contents of his dream. (Which have been going on for two months.) His counselor tells him to not agonize over the things he can’t change, but to work on the things he can change.

Steven takes this advice very seriously and perhaps too far. For, example he tries to quit drum lessons instead though he just doesn’t pay. This saves the family eighty dollars a month. He takes it too far in my opinion by shaving his head bald to match his brother.

Steven goes to the counselor because he wants to get out of class. He also said that he could do for some candy hearts. When he gets down to the counselor she tells him to focus on the things he can change instead of the things he can't.
I think this is good advice because he could help his family alot if he focous on the things he can change. One thing he does to follow her advice is that he shaves his head so Jeffrey isn't the only bald one. This makes Jeffery really happy.

Steven sought his counselor's advice, since he wanted to get out of Social Studies and since he was starting to trust Mrs. Galley. She told him to stop agonizing about the things he can't change and to start working on the things you CAN change. I believe that this is good advice for Steven, since he is always thinking about Jeffrey's illness that he can't change and not about things he can change, like sending away sick people from his house. Steven follows her advice specifically by trying to quit his drum lessons to keep his family some money, though he got it easy, since admitting that he had money problems to Mr. Stoll got him to be able to have drum lessons for free. Also, Steven realized he couldn't help Jeffrey's hair grow back, but he could show support by shaving his hair, which made Jeffrey happier.
